During Spring Break, the Boys’ Lacrosse team hosted 18 middle school boys from the Harlem Lacrosse and Leadership (HLL) organization.

Founded in 2011 to create a holistic youth services organization around lacrosse, HLL offers academic and behavioral intervention, lacrosse instruction, mentoring and college preparation, and boarding school admissions counseling to at-risk youth. The program is designed to use lacrosse to motivate students in school and life, while also helping to place program graduates in independent schools after eighth grade.

During the visit, HLL students stayed with School families and participated in a clinic at the end of the week. School parent Michael Woodfolk ’84 and Associate Head of School for Academics Fred Chandler helped run the clinic, as did alumni Myron Ripley ’86 and Nate Rullman ’98. Other notable activities for the HLL students included touring the University of Virginia School of Law, School of Medicine, and Darden School of Business, and interacting with U.Va. lacrosse coaches and players.

St. Anne’s-Belfield School alumnus Owen Van Arsdale ’10, current U.Va. lacrosse team captain, will begin working full-time with HLL for a two year commitment after graduation.
