Kindergarten Class Celebrates Diwali

With the help of St. Anne’s-Belfield School parent Dr. Neeral Shah, Miss Kelly’s Kindergarten class celebrated the Hindu festival of Diwali. Dr. Shah explained to the students that Diwali, the “festival of lights,” is determined by a lunar calendar and he was happy to be with them on November 11, 2015, the day of Diwali.

In addition to discussing the festival, Dr. Shah read students Lighting a Lamp and showed them a silk kurta, a traditional male garment in India, which would be worn in honor of the holiday. He explained that many families decorate their homes with rangoli during Diwali, a form of art in which colored sand or perhaps rice is used to create graphic patterns. The group also discussed how families light diyas, or lamps and candles, to celebrate and welcome guests, as well as distribute sweet treats, visit temples, and even light fireworks in celebration. After watching a short video on rangoli design, the students created their own with templates and colored sand on a Learning Village playground.

Many thanks to Dr. Shah for joining us on Diwali!
